If you want to know where checkpoint screening is going, it helps to look at who is designing it. Not the policy. The people. One company makes that easy, because it lays the whole thing out on its own website.
One Company, Nearly Every Checkpoint
K2 Security Screening Group integrates security screening systems into airports. By its own account, it has done that work for every Category X airport and more than 92 percent of all TSA-regulated passenger airports, across 25 years and more than 1,500 airport projects. When a checkpoint is designed, rebuilt, or re-equipped, there is a strong chance this firm laid it out and moved the machines in.
By its own description, K2 works inside TSA's own process. It translates TSA's Checkpoint Requirements and Planning Guidelines, navigates the agency's Capability Acceptance Process, and serves as a TSA checkpoint design subject matter expert. That is a company operating deep inside the machinery that decides what a checkpoint is and how it runs.
One thing to be clear about up front, because it matters. K2 does not run screening. It does not employ screeners or bid to take over checkpoints the way the private screening companies do. It designs, installs, and integrates the checkpoint itself, the layout and the machines. So this is not a story about a company competing for your job. It is a story about who builds the place you work, and where they are pointing it.
That alone is just a well-placed contractor. What makes it worth an officer's attention is who runs it.
Who They Are
Read K2's own leadership bios and a pattern appears that the company presents as a selling point.
Its Executive Vice President, Steve Karoly, by his own biography and his own congressional testimony, served as Acting Assistant Administrator of TSA's Office of Requirements and Capabilities Analysis and led the agency's Innovation Task Force, the office that decided which screening technologies TSA would pursue. He testified before Congress in 2017 at a hearing titled "Checkpoint of the Future." He now sets strategy at the company that sells and installs the technology.
Its Vice President of Aviation, Mara Winn, also led that same Innovation Task Force. So the firm has two of the office's leaders under one roof.
Another Vice President, Keith Jeffries, spent his TSA career as Federal Security Director at Los Angeles, and before that as Deputy Director for Field Operations at headquarters, where by his biography he managed a three billion dollar budget and 43,000 officers across 452 airports. The person who once oversaw the federal screening workforce at that scale now leads the firm's advisory program for airports weighing their security options. He has also become one of the industry's regular public voices on privatization, quoted by national outlets explaining how airports move to private screening and what it changes.
A Senior Director, Gerry Phelan, spent 21 years at TSA and is credited, in his biography and in trade press, with standing up TSA's first remote checkpoint screening. Remember that phrase.
None of these moves is hidden, and none is improper on its face. People leave government and work in industry every day. The point is simpler and worth sitting with. The people who shaped the direction of TSA's checkpoint technology from inside the agency now work for the firm that supplies it. The requirements and the sale now share a building.
What They Are Building
This matters more when you look at what the firm and its people are actually working toward, because it is not only the checkpoint you know today.
Start with that phrase to remember. One of K2's own leaders built what his own record calls TSA's first remote checkpoint screening, the model where the officer resolving an image is not standing at the lane but somewhere else. This is not hypothetical. TSA's own website describes the agency pursuing off-premises remote screening, so that officers at one airport can review images from another. Remote screening is also one of the specific things the recent House appropriations report directed TSA to study expanding. The man who built the government's first version now works for the company positioned to help deploy it.
Then there is the newer piece, and it needs to be stated carefully because the facts are specific.
K2's Vice President of Aviation, Mara Winn, is a named inventor on two United States patents for augmented reality security screening. The patents are owned by the Department of Homeland Security. She co-invented them while in federal service, and the government holds the rights. K2 does not own them. She is a named inventor, now working at K2.
What the patents describe is worth an officer's attention. The technology puts a head-up display in front of the officer that maps a scanner's alarm directly onto the passenger in real time and walks the officer through resolving it. Read how the patent describes its own aim. Augmented reality, it says, offers a way to "greatly mitigate the dependence on physical screening" in resolving alarms. It states that the system lets operators clear most alarms "through visual inspection alone, without needing additional physical screening or pat-down." The second patent adds a system that guides an operator through complex procedures, in its own words, "regardless of the level of training of the operator," and that tracks and prunes those procedures over time to streamline them.
Be precise about what that is and is not. These patents are built around an officer who is still there, wearing the display and doing the work. The documents describe assisting the operator, not removing the operator. What they also describe, in their own words, is technology whose stated purpose is to reduce how much screening depends on the officer's physical hands, and to guide the task in a way that lowers the training it requires. Those are not our characterizations. They are the patent's.
It is only fair to place the other framing beside it. TSA's own Innovation Task Force describes this kind of technology as tools for its people, saying that investments in technology are critical to giving the frontline workforce next generation tools to identify and resolve alarms. Both descriptions are on the record. One calls it a tool for the officer. The other, the patent, describes its purpose as mitigating dependence on the officer's physical screening. An officer can hold both and decide what to make of them.
Why Airports Listen
It would be easy to assume the people running airports are being pushed into this. Mostly they are not. The private model is being pitched to them as a genuinely attractive deal, and many of them find it so.
Jeffries, the former Los Angeles security director now at K2, put the airport view plainly on the record this year. Asked by a reporter about the newest privatization program, he said one airport had shown real interest, others thought it sounded good, and many were saying it "sounds too good to be true." Sit with that phrase. People say something is too good to be true when the offer is appealing and they are only questioning whether it can deliver. The appeal is not in doubt. Someone else carries the cost of the equipment. Someone else absorbs the staffing shortfalls that turned recent shutdowns into headlines. Someone else takes on the technology upgrades.
For an airport director, that is a real and rational draw. Here is the part the officer has to see clearly. Every piece of that appeal, the cost someone else carries, the workforce someone else manages, is the federal screening operation being lifted out and handed to a contractor. The same deal reads as opportunity or as displacement depending entirely on where you stand in the building.
A Decade of the Same Language
Step back and a throughline runs across a decade, stated by these people and this firm in their own words at each step.
In 2017, Karoly told Congress that automated screening lanes increase throughput and reduce the number of people waiting in line. In 2020, Winn, then running TSA's Innovation Task Force, described the agency's vision on a public stage as focused on reducing passenger interaction. The federal patents from 2024 and 2025 describe mitigating dependence on physical screening and clearing alarms without a pat-down. In 2025, K2 announced a partnership with an AI screening firm aimed at streamlining the screening process, with a focus on screening aviation workers.
Efficiency. Reduced interaction. Reduced dependence on physical screening. Streamlining. That is a consistent line of language, from the same people, across nearly ten years. What it means is not something we will tell you. The pattern is the fact. What you make of it is yours.

We lay it out because the officer at the lane rarely gets to see who is designing the lane, or what they are designing it toward. The direction of checkpoint technology is being shaped by people who know the workforce from the inside, and it is being pointed, in their own documents, toward remote screening and toward reducing how much screening depends on the officer's hands.
